Product Photo Requirements: Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Shopify (2026)
Every marketplace rejects or buries listings that break its image rules. Here is what Amazon, eBay, Etsy and Shopify expect in 2026, and how to turn any product photo into a compliant image in about five seconds each.
What the marketplaces require
The rules differ slightly per platform, but they all point the same direction: a clean, square, well-lit image where the product fills most of the frame.
- Amazon: the main image must sit on a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), fully covering the frame. A square image of 1600×1600px or larger is recommended so the zoom function works; the product should fill at least 85% of the frame.
- eBay: a square image of at least 1600×1600px is recommended for the photo that appears in search results. The background must be light or white for the main photo in most categories.
- Etsy: no strict background rule for handmade goods, but listings with a clean white or lifestyle background convert noticeably better. Around 2000px on the shortest side keeps your listing sharp on retina screens.
- Shopify: no enforced spec, but 2048×2048px square is the sweet spot — large enough for theme zoom-ins, small enough to load fast. Transparent PNGs give your theme the most layout freedom.
The five-second compliance workflow
All of these rules reduce to two operations: cut the product out, and place it on pure white (or keep it transparent) at a square size. That is exactly what removebg.best does in one pass. Drop the photo in, let the AI isolate the product, switch the background to white, and download the PNG.
For lighting problems — glare, colour casts, shadows creeping in at the edges — fixing the background is still step one; a clean cutout on pure white hides most minor blemishes on the backdrop side.
Bulk tip for whole catalogues
If you manage more than a handful of SKUs, one-by-one never happens. The Bulk Remover accepts up to 30 images per run, processes them live and hands you a single ZIP of transparent PNGs — put them on white in your theme, or upload them directly where the marketplace expects white already.
Specs do get revised from time to time; check the seller help centre for your category before a big upload, especially for restricted categories like apparel, where extra images and swatch photos may be required.
